A few other thoughts

January 8, 2012

What was somewhat surreal to me at first was the fact that the sunrise was at ~8:40 AM today (In Coppenhagen yesterday, Sunrise was somewhere around 7:30-8:00 AM).  The sunset yesterday was ~4:30 PM (Sunset in Newark yesterday was just before I got on my plane, around 5:00 PM or so).  Then I remembered that I am considerably further north, and that the effect of the seasons on day length is much more pronounced up here.  I came here ~9 days after the Winter Solstice, and I am leaving ~14 days before the Summer Solstice.  These are the kind of things you know academically, but don’t really grok until you see it for yourself (since you take it for granted the day-night time patterns are always relatively similar if you haven’t been significantly north/south of where you usually reside).  Another example of this was another USian friend of mine took a vacation in Austrailia.  One of the things that shook her initially was the different locations of the Stars relative to her position.

I know it’s not much, but I figured this travel sub-blog thing is for all the little details of this excursion, and better I write it now before I get used to it and it “fades into the background.”
